Understanding causal factors is the starting point of an effective cause analysis investigation. A causal factor chart is a technique that is used to record and display all the actions and conditions that were in place and contributed to the failure in a quality system.

The causal factor chart is created through making a timeline of the events leading to the problem. For each event, conditions that contributed to the event are added, and then analyzed to determine if the conditions are a causal factor.
